Focus Asia 2021

After the success of the 2020 edition, which took place entirely online, FOCUS ASIA, the industry segment of the Udine Far East Film Festival, is back. In line with health directives, the operating formula will adopt a two-pronged approach, meaning the 2021 edition will take place in both digital and physical (one might almost say "analogue") form from the 16th to the 18th of June.

Professionals are eagerly awaiting the All Genres Project Market, one of the most important events dedicated to artistic and productive connections between Asia and Europe. The call for new projects is also now officially open (deadline 20th of April) and as we speak, at the FILMART in Hong Kong and thanks to the partnership between the FEFF and the Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF), FOCUS ASIA curators have just selected the dazzling Getting Nowhere by Yang Mingming, a road movie that tells the story of a husband with too many secrets and a wife looking to take revenge... The film won the Udine Focus Asia Award. The objective of the Award is to encourage and facilitate coproduction between Asia and Europe.

Another highly anticipated event is FAR EAST IN PROGRESS, the first (and only) European platform dedicated to Asian films in post-production. A natural stop for projects presented in Asian markets or developed during workshops like TIES THAT BIND and which are in search of international distribution and premieres at the most important festivals (the deadline for participation expires on the 30th of April). Last year, seven teams from seven different countries took part and the prize was won by China/USA/Italy co-production We Are Living Things by director Antonio Tibaldi.

Among this year's innovations (the complete programme of the 2021 edition will be announced in the coming weeks), the ASIAN GATES section is certainly worthy of mention: a programme of masterclasses, conferences and case studies aimed at European film professionals who want to deepen their knowledge of the opportunities offered by the Asian market.
