No Woman, No Cry

Taichi, Kazumi and Hideji are on the run after staging an armoured car robbery. Hideji escapes with the money, but his friends are captured by the police. Five years pass and Taichi, released from prison, is looking for Hideji and his share of the raid. On the way, he picks up a strange girl called Noa, who is afflicted with a deadly disease. When he finally finds Hideji, who runs a cafe at the seaside, he falls in love with his friend's beautiful inscrutable wife Reiko. Reiko has become tired of Hideji who she believes has transformed into a wimp, no longer the strong and willful man she fell in love with. Taichi dumps Noa and is pursuaded by Reiko to kill Hideji. Several month later, Kazumi is released from prison and arrives at the cafe with Noa. Taichi has taken Hideji's place, jealously watching over Reiko, and soon realizes that he will be the next victim... Kamata Yoshitaka's second feature is based on a script by Zeze Takahisa under a pen name. The film contains many elements typical for Zeze, notably in the final scene at the beach when the elements (fire, water, earth and wind) come together as life and death merge together. The central character of the film is Reiko, powerfully played by Sasaki Mayuko in one of her best roles. She loves strong men, but deprives them of their powers, turning them into weaklings. To her men are nothing but compliant toys that she throws away when a replacement turns up. In 1998 Kamata won the best new director at the pink film awards with this film while Konishi Yasumasa was awarded the prize for best cinematographer. His incredible compositions add much to the fascination of the film.
