Hong Kong superstars Andy Lau and Sammi Cheng reunited for another local box office success in Yesterday Once More - the pair’s third collaboration with director Johnnie To after Needing You... and Love on a Diet. Lau and Cheng play Mr and Mrs To, two globe-trotting thieves living separate lives of excess with their spoils. Although Mr To walked out of the relationship two years earlier when Mrs To showed more interest in a haul of diamonds than in him, the woman remains the love of his life. So when Mr To reads in the newspaper that Mrs To will remarry to millionaire Steve (Carl Ng) - most likely in an attempt to grab a family heirloom jeweled necklace - he steps in to make sure the woman’s plans for the new marriage and a fresh heist can’t go as planned.
A playful affair until the husband’s motives become clear, Yesterday Once More’s plot brings the estranged couple back together in a series of cat and mouse games. While Mrs To focuses on getting the necklace into her hands, her suitor’s mother (Jenny Hu) gets involved in the scheme as well and deals with a remarkably alert insurance surveyor (Lam Ka-tung) on the side. Johnnie To’s romance takes all manner of turns in playing up the lavish lifestyle of its characters, from luxury homes and outrageously priced wines through to impromptu international travel; the pair even fly over to the Italian town of Udine to roam the streets and manage a spot of thievery.
Andy Lau and Sammi Cheng show natural chemistry in their latest screen adventure together, while Carl Ng makes for an amusing mother’s boy under former Shaw Brothers star Jenny Hu, revisiting the silver screen for the first time since the 1970s.
