How many times have the doors of space-time (and the laws of physics) been blown apart on the big screen? And how many times have goodies and baddies found themselves traveling back and forth through the centuries (or millennia) to do battle? Okay, now forget all the movies you know, from Avengers: Endgame and Terminator to Interstellar and Back to the Future, because the incredible South Korean response to a thousand Hollywood blockbusters is on its way: action/sci-fi saga Alienoid by director Choi Dong-hoon!
The first two chapters, Alienoid Part One and Alienoid: Return to the Future, will be distributed in Italy by Minerva Pictures with Full Action Channel on Prime Video e The Film Club, but will be making a stop off at the Far East Film Festival in Udine, which has always been home to the finest Made-in-Asia pop cinema. In fact, it's no coincidence that Choi Dong-hoon has already seen four of his films presented at the FEFF: the thriller Tazza - The High Rollers (2006), which Choi personally accompanied to Udine, the fantasy Woochi (2009), the blockbuster The Thieves (2013) and the spy story Assassination (2015). A long tradition which is now being renewed and which will once more see the director take the stage of the festival.
Shot back-to-back, Alienoid Part One and Alienoid: Return to the Future play on the irresistible narrative and stylistic tensions between the era of the Goryeo dynasty and the present day: the Korea of the 1300s, where magicians and warriors compete for a divine sword capable of bending time and the hyper-technological Korea of the third millennium, where aliens and humans coexist, though none too peacefully. Two opposing worlds that collide in an adventure as absurd as it is spectacular thanks to the direction of Choi Dong-hoon, who is clearly having the time of his life letting his imagination run free!
The Alienoid saga, which is destined to become a cult and which the FEFF will be showing as a double bill for the joy of all Fareasters, confidently blurs genre boundaries, taking the public for a gallop through the prairies of Choi Dong-hoon's vision: a magical and anarchic land where science fiction, wuxia, detective thrillers, comedy, melodrama and the finest action cinema all speak (and loudly!) the same language!
