The programme for Tuesday 29 April CONNECTIONS The wonderful Lily Franky, from FEFF 27 to Cannes 78 with Renoir, by “FarEast” director Chie Hayakawa! Today, the third Mongolian title in the festival's history: Janchivdorj Sengedorj's Silent City Driver
– Special guest of FEFF 27, where he's just accompanied Janus Victoria's beautiful debut film Diamonds in the Sand, the great Lily Franky will also be taking a bit of FEFF to the Croisette: together with very young Yui Suzuki, he'll be in competition at Cannes 78 with Chie Hayakawa's second film Renoir. It was in Udine three years ago that the Japanese director presented her powerful debut Plan 75, the product of Focus Asia (the FEFF's industry section) which was then distributed in Italian theatres by Tucker Film (remember?). All sentimental value aside, it's significant news on the movie industry front, because it fully conveys the real meaning of a festival: creating connections
And speaking of connections, we can't fail to mention the connection between the FEFF and Mongolia, which is certainly one of the most distant parts of the "far East". After Baatar Bat-Ulzii's 2011 Operation Tatar and 2023's Sales Girl by Janchivdorj Sengedorj, today (the 29th of April) the third Mongolian title in Fareast history will be screening: the highly anticipated Silent City Driver, also by Janchivdorj Sengedorj. An intense noir that reflects on the theme of atonement and tells us the story of young Myagmar, an ex-con traumatised by the nightmarish experience of prison and now employed as a driver at a funeral home. Is there really a future, or even a hope of one, for him? And among the other 9 films on this sixth day, which is a real journey that connects Udine with Hong Kong (The Way We Talk), Japan (Good Luck), China (Successor), Taiwan (Family Matters) and South Korea (Hear Me: Our Summer), how could we not highlight the recently restored version of Tsui Hark's incredible horror movie Green Snake and the equally incredible Chinatown Cha-Cha by director Luka Yang, which sees the over-65s who make up senior dance company Grant Avenue Follies shine?
