To Hell With The Devil

The Hui brothers, as a Cantonese comedy team, not only work wonderfully together but are box office magic as well. Michael Hui knew how to do the solo act (The Warlord) while brother Sam proved his singular appeal in the blockbuster Aces Go Placesof Cinema City. It is natural for Ricky to do his own "thing" alone in a different way and that's via horror-comedy with a fancy title. Ricky Hui is Kit, a simple man who has been granted seven wishes if he consents to give his soul to the devil. Unfortunately, he is also the target of a God-fearing priest who has been revived and is told to return to earth to convert people to the "faith". Overnight, Ricky becomes a singing superstar, finds love and all his fantasies become a reality. But like a good or bad dream, there are complications. Ricky's personality and his fumbling comedy technique are agreeable but blank and bland. The best special effects sequence is the imaginative recreation of a space video game using humans as electronic targets.
