We live in a time where BTS and Blackpink are the biggest pop groups on the planet, Squid Games is the biggest Netflix show of all time, and Parasite won the Best Picture Oscar. Hallyu or the Korean wave has finally taken world domination. The K-Pop industrial complex is sprouted by a grueling, intensive bootcamp where Korean kids train harder than Olympians, and their every move and breath is curated.
This machine is fueled by an equally intensive fanbase with a global reach, where TikTok, Reddit and Academia break down every move, debate every rumor, and protect these pop princes and princesses with unconditional love. And when that particular idol is mired in a scandal? Well, it’s traumatic for the fan, who usually goes through the 12-steps of grief then eventual acceptance.
In Oh Se-yeo’'s Fanatic, the filmmaker follows former fans of Korean stars accused of crimes who are “suffering more because they loved them.” A former fan herself, Oh started the project out of spite, which eventually became therapeutic, revealing conversations with friends and other friends that are ultimately heartfelt, contemplative and, at times, hilarious.
Oh Seyeon
